Women's Rock n Roll Retreat
March 31 - April 2, 2023
Lake Harriet House of Music, Minneapolis
Showcase Concert Location:
Uptown VFW, Minneapolis
Applications begin December 5, 2022!
***Women's Rock n Roll Retreat is a three-day musical adventure for women, nonbinary and trans folks ages 19 and older. In one weekend, you'll learn or expand your knowledge on an instrument (electric guitar, bass, drums, vocals, or keyboards), form a band, collaboratively write an original song or two with your bandmates and participate in various workshops that may include topics such as songwriting, recording, instrument repair, etc. The weekend culminates in a live rock show at a local venue where all the camp bands perform the original song(s) they wrote at camp to an enthusiastic, cheering crowd of supporters and fans! WRRR is open to all skill levels- including those with no prior musical experience.***
Frequently Asked Questions
***Please commit to attending camp all three days for the entire duration.*** Any missed time at camp may inhibit the progress of your band.
Who can sign up for WRRR?
Women, trans, and nonbinary folks over the age of 19 can sign up for Women's Rock n Roll Retreat. NO MUSICAL EXPERIENCE NECESSARY / ALL SKILL LEVELS WELCOME. You don’t have to bring your own instrument, but feel free to do so if you like. Applications begin December 5, 2022.
Why do I have to complete an application this year? Why can't I just register like I did in the past?
We are excited to announce a new registration system that will help us to better serve the Twin Cities community! We regularly receive far more applications for WRRR than we are able to accommodate. So this year, we will be doing an on-going application process instead of the first-come-first serve process we’ve done in the past. This application change is part of a larger organizational commitment to make our programming available and informed by the diverse community of folks that call the Twin Cities home! We will use this new application process to ensure a camper cohort who bring a multitude of identities, musical interests and experiences. We encourage anyone who is interested in camp to fill out the initial application as we never know how many applications we will receive! If we receive more applications than camp spots, we will add your application to the waiting list.
What instrument can I play at WRRR? Do I have to own my instrument? Do I have to have any experience or take lessons prior to WRRR?
You can choose between drums, electric guitar, electric bass, keyboards and vocals! We will have all necessary instruments and gear at camp, so do not worry if you don't have one! You do NOT have to have ANY instrument experience before camp. Our teachers are very skilled instructors and will help you rock out whether you have never touched your instrument or you have played it for 50+ years. At our most recent session of WRRR, 40% of campers had never played their instrument and they all totally rocked it out!
If my application is chosen, will I be able to play my first choice instrument at camp?
We will make every attempt to honor your first instrument choice. Sometimes, in order to make sure that all bands have the necessary instrumentation, we may need to switch you to your second or third choice instrument. The more instrument options you choose on your application, the better your chances of getting in!
What does low or no scent mean?
She Rock She Rock works to create a low/no scent spaces for all of our programming, in order to be accessible to folks with chemical/scent sensitivities. Personal care products such as perfume, essential oils, scented lotions, fragranced hair products and/or similar products should not be worn at WRRR.
I'm really hesitant to apply for camp. What if I'm chosen, but am not good at songwriting or playing an instrument?
New experiences can be really scary and we understand that this weekend can be intimidating for some folks. We are here to provide a safe, non-judgemental and non-competitive space to try new things and ROCK OUT. We have a talented staff who will be there to help you the whole weekend. All songs are written collaboratively, so you will have your 4-5 other bandmates and your 2 band coaches to help you out. And, there are no apologies at camp. Seriously, it's our rule to say 'I Rock' when we make mistakes and not 'I'm Sorry'. We make it a point to make sure everyone knows how hard THEY ROCK no matter how much musical experience they have. We will work with you to make camp an uplifting experience.
Okay, that makes sense. But, I'm "Just a mom" or "Just a banker", should I really apply to attend this camp?
First of all, you are not "just" anything! You are a unique, one-of-a-kind human being! You deserve to take time for yourself and learn something new (or hone in on your creative skill). WRRR is a great way to meet new people, connect with your creativity and boost your confidence. Even if you never touch your instrument before camp or after camp, the experience is incredibly rewarding and you will have a blast.
What is the cancellation policy?
If your application is chosen and you need to cancel after sending in your registration, please notify email@example.com right away. If you choose to donate your tuition fee, you will be given a tax receipt. If you cancel anytime prior to February 28th, you are entitled to a full refund minus a $25 cancellation fee. If you cancel during the month prior to camp, you will not be issued a refund. Please note that absolutely no refunds will be issued after the start of the program.
Is food provided for the participants?
As of right now, meals and snacks are not included in the tuition price. The facility we will be at is within walking distance from many restaurants, coffee shops and cafes. Also, feel free to bring a bag lunch and snacks, we have a refrigerator at the facility if you need to use it.
Can I play my acoustic guitar at camp?
We think acoustic guitars are super cool, but we also strongly encourage folks to step out of their comfort zone and try out the electric guitar! If you'd like to try an electric, we've got one we can loan you for the duration of camp! If you really want to play your acoustic- just make sure it has a pickup in it. Otherwise you won't be able to hear it over the drummer in your band, and we generally don't have enough microphones to share with guitars.
I'm coming in from out of town, can I stay overnight at the camp location?
WRRR is not an overnight camp, but there are plenty of hotels nearby (camp is about 15-20 min from the Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport) where you can book a room. Also, AirBNB could be a good option for an inexpensive place to stay. We are also asking registrants to indicate whether or not they'd be willing to house an out-of-town camper for the weekend, so that may be a possibility too: e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org to find out if there is anyone on the list and we can send you their contact info.
If I have some time conflicts during the three days of camp, can I still apply?
We ask campers to fully commit to being at camp for the entire duration of the program, which is 10am-7pm, Friday-Sunday, and includes the grand finale of the entire week; the Sunday evening showcase concert! When campers are put into bands, and much like any other kind of team, they all count on each other to be at all their band rehearsals and the final concert, which is the culmination of the entire three days of camp. If one band member is missing or is late for daily rehearsals or the showcase concert, it makes it difficult for the rest of the band to move forward, and we feel that is not fair to their bandmates.
Okay, I'm considering applying for camp, but I'm still unsure. Are you sure I should apply?
YES! You rock! It's okay to be nervous or unsure, in fact many folks come into camp on the first morning and are incredibly hesitant or nervous. You'll get through it and you'll have a blast. Do it.
